William Goldsmith, Copper Halfpenny, 1794 Obv A large building. Arouind the perimeter BRAINTREE & BOCKING HALFPENCE Ex. MDCCXCIV  Rev A figure of Hope standing, facing forward, left arm resting on an anchor. Around the perimeter SUCCESS TO TRADE AND COMMERCE.  Period close to anchor Edge PAYABLE AT W GOLDSMITHS BRAINTREE ESSEX. X X .  (Conder p.33, 2; Pye p.9, 8; Virt p.178; Atkins p. 26, 3; D&H Essex 3)

Sharply struck and nearly choice uncirculated with a bit of faded color remaining. Quite rare.

This is the variant noted by D&H with the period close to the anchor and the same die used for Durham 5. It is much more difficult to locate than D&H suggests and this is the best example that I have handled in some time.

William Goldsmith, (1740-1816), tailor and draper, Braintree.
